The Best Online Remote Jobs That Give You Both Freedom and a Paycheck

When I first started working online eight years ago, I tried everything. Social media gigs, random side hustles, admin tasks, even jobs that promised “easy money” (and ended up paying almost nothing). I've spent countless hours and dollars on courses from people promising online financial freedom to sadly not produce the results I had hoped and honestly, it left me feeling pretty defeated. So after much trial and error, I eventually boiled it down to 5 main categories that actually provide stability, growth and the opportunity to create a business of your own.

But here’s what I learned throughout my digital nomad journey: not all remote jobs are created equal and once you know which category fits your personal strengths, the whole online work world starts making sense. We live in a time where there is so much opportunity right in the palm of our hands (thank you smart phones) so if working online has been a deep desire of yours- this is for you. Trust me, the online life you dream about is not far fetched and TOTALLY doable, so let's get into it....

The 5 full proof categories to create a sustainable and profitable online business of your own are:

  1. Marketing & Lead Generation
  2. Sales
  3. Bookkeeping & Finance
  4. Executive Assistant / Operations / VA
  5. Property Management & Hospitality

Within these, there are dozens of jobs you can start today and grow into long-term careers or even your own business. So let’s break it down a little more!

1. Marketing & Lead Generation

What is the number one thing that EVERY business in the world needs? you guessed it...LEADS aka customers. Without customers, there is no business and to be honest, business owners have so many responsibilities on their plates that marketing usually takes a backseat. However, business owners also know how crucial it is to have a strong marketing plan so they are willing to outsource to avoid the learning curve of taking on the task themselves. So, if you’re creative, love social media, or enjoy helping businesses get seen and grow, this lane might be your calling. Companies will always pay for leads and always need marketing, no matter how the economy is.

Job Ideas:

  • Social Media Manager – Plan content, schedule posts, manage engagement. Entry: $20–40/hr, but specialists earn $60k+.
  • Lead Generation & Funnel Building: Run ads, build CRM's and provide the life blood of a business. Retainers starting $1.5k+
  • Content Writer/Copywriter – Blog posts, ad copy, website text. $25–100/hr.
  • UGC Creator – Brands want TikToks/Reels from real people. $100–500 per video.
  • Media Buyer – Run Meta or Google ads. $1k–5k/month per client.
  • SEO Specialist – Help brands rank on Google. $25–75/hr, often on retainers.

Why it works: If you can bring clients customers, you’ll never run out of work. It's truly the most win-win situation when it comes to any working relationship.

2. Sales

When you master the art of sales: connecting with people, digging into their pains, offering a solution and rolling objections- you are unstoppable. Trust me, I know sales can feel intimidating (because at one point I thought so too, at first I viewed it as an ick tbh) , but hear me out - it’s one of the fastest ways to build real income while teaching you a priceless skill: confidence in speaking with anyone. And it’s not about being pushy, it’s about connecting, asking the right questions, and offering solutions.

Job Ideas:

  • High-Ticket Closer – Commission-based, but realistic $5k–30k/month.
  • Appointment Setter – Book calls & pre-qualify leads for sales teams. $2k–4k/month starting.
  • Affiliate Marketer – Share products/services online, earn commissions. Income varies but scalable.

Why it works: If you can sell, you’ll always have opportunities and those skills transfer to any business you build later. You can stack multiple closer and appointment setter roles or even have it as a second income, taking a few calls per day as extra cash flow.

3. Bookkeeping & Finance

Hellooo numbers- I know it doesn't sound like the sexiest job in the world but trust me when I say this is most definitely needed and a very lucrative way to build monthly recurring revenue while on your own schedule. Everyone needs bookkeeping and a lot of business owners don't want the headache of balancing books every month - which is where you step in. I was shocked that once you get a rhythm down- this job is quite a walk in the park, yet so important and needed. Probably one of the most consistent, stable categories. If you’re detail-oriented and like order (type A girlies who love to organize), this is your lane.

Job Ideas:

  • Bookkeeper – Track expenses, invoices, reconcile accounts. $25–50/hr.
  • Payroll Specialist – Manage payroll for small businesses. $40–60k/year.
  • Financial Assistant – Budgeting and forecasting. $25–45/hr.

Why it works: Every single business needs this, and most owners would rather outsource. You can easily stack multiple clients on the side and make this a great business of your own needed year round - plus generally, you can work any hours as long as the work is done.

4. Executive Assistant, Operations & VA

This is the backbone of every business- owners would give their right arm to have someone who is reliable, they can trust and will get in the trenches ready to execute any task thrown their way. Finding a great VA is like finding a needle in a haystack, so if you show up and put in good work- you will be smooth sailing with advancement and referrals. Not to mention, this is a great position if you love to learn, as most times you will be implementing new systems and learning directly from the CEO. Tons of transferrable skills come from this type of work, so If you’re organized, good with communication, and love variety, you’ll thrive here.

Job Ideas:

  • Virtual Assistant (VA) – General admin, email, scheduling. $20–35/hr.
  • Operations Assistant – Systems + workflows. $25–50/hr.
  • Project Manager – Oversee launches or team projects. $30–60/hr.
  • Customer Support Specialist – Handle client communication. $18–25/hr.

Why it works: You get a front-row seat to how businesses run and many women use this as a launchpad for starting their own agencies. Every business will always need a virtual assistant and trust me when I say its a business owners DREAM, to find a reliable VA who becomes their right hand gal. It doesn't take a lot to stand out either.

5. Property Management & Hospitality

This one’s a bit of an oddball job that not many people think about but is really close to my heart - especially living in Hawai‘i, where short-term rentals and boutique stays are everywhere. Property management is such a hidden gem in the remote-work world. Back in the day it was extremely location dependent but over the years with the rise of technology, it has proven to work fully remote. In fact, I used to manage 14 properties in a state I had never even set foot in. Of course, you will find property owners who want you to be local BUT it's not always the case.

Job Ideas:

  • Property Manager – Handle bookings, communication, guest experience. $1k–5k/month per property.
  • Vacation Rental Consultant – Optimize listings/photos. $25–50/hr.
  • Airbnb Liaison - Be the point of contact for guests for all their needs. $25-50/hr or retainer model.

Why it works: Real estate and rentals aren’t going anywhere. If you know how to market or manage them, you’ll always be in demand. Property management and guest communication can be a headache for property owners- so having a reliable property manager is the best gift on earth to ease their mind.

Actually putting the plan in action...

You don’t need to try every random online job out there (trust me, I did). Stick to these five categories, and you’ll find opportunities that pay well, grow with you, and open the door to freedom and even business ownership.

It only takes one step to get started. Now is the best time to experiment, build skills, and carve out your own lane. Start with one category, get good at it, and you’ll be setting yourself up not just for income - but for the kind of life you actually want to live.

I'm always here if you have questions or need help getting started - it can be intimidating starting out (I was there once too) so whether its actionable steps of direction or words of encouragement, I'm in your corner to help you succeed!

xoxo,
